Infrared thermometers for measuring ear canal temperature have an even tighter requirement of ± 0.2 °C (±0.36 °F). There are several other requirements described in ASTM E 1965-98 that all help you know what to look for in a qualifying thermometer. And, depending on where you live in the world, there will be similar standards, like this one, to help you know what is required in the region where you live.
