These Contactless Digital Thermometers are sometimes colloquially known as laser thermometers due to their use of lasers for precise targeting, or they may be called non-contact thermometers or temperature guns, highlighting their capability to measure temperature without physical contact. By assessing the quantity of infrared energy released by the object and considering its emissivity, these devices can generally determine the object's temperature within a specific range of its actual temperature.

The design of the Medical Infrared electronic thermometer essentially consists of a lens to focus the infrared thermal radiation on to a detector, which converts the radiant power to an electrical signal that can be displayed in units of temperature after being compensated for ambient temperature. This permits temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the object to be measured. The Contactless Digital Thermometers is useful for measuring temperature under circumstances where thermocouples or other probe-type sensors cannot be used or do not produce accurate data for a variety of reasons.
